In the early days of my corporate career, “networking” was a real buzz word – especially because I worked in consulting, which is all about sales and business development at the end of the day. The word ‘networking’ terrified me and I didn’t love the pressure of going to functions where I didn’t know anyone and felt pressure to dazzle other corporate boffins with my brilliance. I’m no introvert but I have a preference for smaller groups when I don’t know people. But it wasn’t even about that – it was about the pressure I put on myself to be something that I didn’t feel I was. Sound familiar?
